ChatGPT and iMessage: three different things people mean

ChatGPT does not have its own iMessage number. People searching for ChatGPT in iMessage usually mean one of three separate official features: Apple's ChatGPT extension for Siri and Writing Tools, OpenAI's ChatGPT desktop app plugin that reads and sends Apple Messages on a Mac, or OpenAI's 1-800-ChatGPT number, which texts over WhatsApp, not iMessage. For a business that wants an AI agent answering real iMessage conversations with customers, that is a separate setup, covered below.

This page is independent of Apple and OpenAI, and is not affiliated with either company.

Does ChatGPT have an iMessage number?

No. OpenAI's own support article, reported on at launch by MacRumors, describes 1-800-ChatGPT (1-800-242-8478) as a number you can call in the United States, and text over WhatsApp using the same number. That is phone calling and WhatsApp texting, not iMessage or SMS. There is no published, official ChatGPT iMessage contact.

Apple's ChatGPT extension: what it does in Messages

Apple's own guide describes the ChatGPT extension as part of Apple Intelligence: with it enabled, Siri can tap into ChatGPT for more in-depth answers, and Writing Tools can use ChatGPT to create text or images from a description. Apple's guide states the Compose option is available in Notes, Messages and Safari, and that you can enable ChatGPT without an account.

That is a writing-assist and Siri feature inside the Messages compose box, not a bot you can message back and forth with as a contact. It only works on devices that support Apple Intelligence and the ChatGPT extension.

OpenAI's ChatGPT Messages plugin for Mac

Separately, OpenAI shipped an Apple Messages plugin inside the ChatGPT desktop app for Mac, reported by multiple outlets including 9to5Mac and Engadget around August 20, 2026. It lets ChatGPT read and search iMessage, SMS and RCS threads on an Apple silicon Mac, summarize conversations, draft replies, and send messages through the native Messages app with your approval before each send (or standing approval for a specific conversation if you grant it).

That plugin runs inside the ChatGPT desktop app, reported to require ChatGPT Work or Codex rather than a standard ChatGPT chat, and it needs macOS permissions for Automation, Contacts and Full Disk Access. It automates your own Mac's Messages app; it is not a hosted business API.

Connecting an AI agent to business iMessage

None of the three official ChatGPT features above are built for a business answering customer iMessage conversations at scale from a shared inbox. For that, the setup looks different: a dedicated business line, a shared team inbox, and an API or MCP server an AI agent can call with explicit permission.

Beam documents exactly that connection. Any AI agent, including a ChatGPT-based one you build or a Claude agent connected over MCP, can read conversations and send messages through Beam's API once you grant sending permission on an active assigned line. See connecting Claude Code to iMessage over MCP for the step-by-step version, or Beam's event webhooks to build a ChatGPT-based agent against the same API.

Sorting out ChatGPT and iMessage

Does ChatGPT have an iMessage number?

No. OpenAI's 1-800-ChatGPT number supports phone calls and WhatsApp texting, not iMessage or SMS. There is no published official ChatGPT iMessage number.

What does Apple's ChatGPT extension do inside Messages?

Per Apple's own guide, it lets Siri give more in-depth answers and lets Writing Tools compose text or images from a description inside apps including Messages. It is a compose and Siri assist feature, not a chat bot you message back and forth with.

Can ChatGPT read and reply to my iMessages automatically?

OpenAI's ChatGPT desktop app for Mac includes a Messages plugin that can read, search and draft replies in your own Messages app on an Apple silicon Mac, sending only with your approval. It automates your personal Mac, not a hosted business line.

Is there an official way to text ChatGPT like a contact?

Yes, but it is WhatsApp, not iMessage: OpenAI's 1-800-ChatGPT number accepts WhatsApp messages. There is no equivalent official iMessage contact.

Can I connect ChatGPT or Claude to iMessage for my business?

Yes. Beam documents an API and MCP server that an AI agent, built on ChatGPT, Claude or another model, can use to read conversations and send messages through a dedicated business line once sending permission is granted.

Does Beam favor Claude over ChatGPT?

No. Beam's API and MCP server work with any compatible agent. Beam documents a Claude Code connection using bearer-token HTTP and a stdio bridge for desktop clients; the same API and webhooks are available to a ChatGPT-based or other agent you build.

Is this page affiliated with OpenAI or Apple?

No. This page describes Apple's and OpenAI's own published features for comparison and is independent of both companies.
